Year 3

The Year 3 classes at Watling Primary School are named after mountain ranges – Andes, Himalayas and Rockies. We currently have one class open in Year 3 – Rockies Class.

The staff that work in Year 3 are Mr Moore, Miss Cross and Miss Boyden. There may be other adults that also work in the year group from time to time.

The Year 3 PE, Library and Forest School days are:

Year 3 start the school day at 8:50am, start lunch at 12:15pm and finish the school day at 3:20pm. The collection and drop off point for Year 3 children is at their classroom door on the main playground.

Home Learning

Our Home Learning Statement provides clarity around our approach and expectations for home learning as children progress through our school. We encourage children to adopt a positive attitude towards home learning and celebrate our Homework Heroes every half term.

Reading

We would like all our pupils to engage in some sort of reading activity at home every day, starting with our youngest children in Nursery. This could be the child reading out loud or being read to by an older sibling or adult.

We use an online recording system called BoomReader to track and comment on any reading activities that your child does. Log-in details for this are shared individually with parents and carers. In addition to this, optional reading challenges can be completed including the National Literacy Trust’s Reading Champion Challenge, and Milton Keynes Library’s Summer Reading Challenge. Maths

Year 3 children access an online platform to support their learning of Maths called Times Tables Rock Stars. Log-in details for this are shared individually with parents and carers.

STEAM Challenges

Each half-term, weekly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) challenges are set for children to investigate as part of their home learning. These are optional and do not have to be completed. Parents and carers can choose which activities to engage with and how often to do so.

Children in Year 3 can bring any STEAM Challenge work they complete into school or submit it to the year group homework email address – year3homework@thedenbighalliance.org.uk.

Top 30 Books for Year 3

The books below are our ‘Top 30’ books for Year 3. Your child will have access to all of these books at some point in their Year 3 journey at Watling Primary School. Most of these books are located in their class library, with some being taught through our reading and writing curriculums. Additional copies of all books are located in our main school library so that children can bring them home to enjoy with you.

These books have been carefully selected to ensure there is a balance of fiction (both classic and contemporary), non-fiction and poetry. Some of the books have been chosen as they promote our Watling Way values and school-wide commitment to sustainability and STEAM subjects.

These books are updated regularly as new books are released so please keep checking back for updates.
